Funds availability for mailed in deposits

  • Deposit sent to the BBVA Compass P.O. Box take slightly longer to arrive at the bank, since we have to pick them up from the post office.
  • The funds will generally be made available to you on the same business day we receive the deposit.
  • In some cases, $200 will be available on the same business day we receive the deposit and the remaining sum will be available the second business day after we receive the deposit.
  • Additional holds may apply for new accounts and specific types of deposits. You can find more details on those below.

Exception holds on mailed deposits

  • During your first 30 days as a customer, the entire sum of most checks or money orders will be made available by the ninth business day after the day of deposit.
    • Some checks (federal, state, and local government checks, along with cashier’s, certified, and teller’s checks) are held differently: during your first 30 days as a customer, the first $5,000 of a day’s total deposits will be made available the same business day as the day of deposit. Any remaining funds will be made available by the ninth business day after the day of deposit.
  • If you deposit a check greater than $5,000, or multiple checks totaling over $5,000 on the same day, the first $200 will be made available on the day of deposit, $4,800 will be made available the second business day after the day of deposit, and any remaining sum will be available by the seventh business day after the day of deposit.
  • If, within the last six months, your account has been overdrawn on six or more banking days or overdrawn by $5,000 or more on two banking days, we may place a hold on the entire sum of any check or money order deposits. Funds will be available by the seventh business day after the day of deposit.
  • We may also place holds on the entire sum of any check or money order deposits if you redeposit a check that’s been returned unpaid, or we have reasonable cause to doubt that we'll be able to collect the check funds from the paying bank. Funds will be available by the seventh business day after the day of deposit.
  • Finally, we may place additional holds in emergencies (such as natural disasters or anything that prevents us from being able to process a deposit). If this happens, the funds will be available by the seventh business day after the day of deposit.

If funds from any of your mailed in deposits are subject to a hold, we'll be in touch when the hold is placed to let you know the reason for the hold and the date the funds will be available.
