How are transactions labeled and mapped?
When you use your card, a bunch of data is collected from the card terminal. We use this data to name, map, and categorize your purchases. Unfortunately, the data we receive is often incorrect or incomplete. Simple’s software attempts to clean up the data by making logical guesses. It’s pretty smart, but it’s not psychic.
So if there are significant errors in that information from the terminal, Simple may display incorrect data. The transaction may come through with the wrong location or merchant name, making it hard to recognize. Or, if the merchant is part of a chain or franchise, the transaction may come through with the location of their headquarters.
If you ever want to see the unedited data for a transaction, just click “Edit.” That will bring up the merchant name as we received it from the card reader. If you still don't recognize the charge, give us a call at 888-248-0632 or send us a message. We'll help you figure out where it's from, and if it's unauthorized, we'll help you dispute the charge. You can learn more about this process in our Fraud Protection article.
